Vice President-elect Kamala Harris is the first woman, the first Black person and the first Asian American elected to the second highest office in the United States.

 

Vice President Kamala Harris was born in and grew up in Oakland, CA. Her father was born in Jamaica and her mother was born in India. Her mother was heavily involved in the Civil Rights movement, making her early experiences attending rallies, the basis of her inspiration to make her life’s work to fight against injustices.

Harris attended Howard University in Washington, D.C., and received her law degree from the University of California, Hastings College of Law. Harris began her professional life with the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office in February of 1998. She was elected the District Attorney of the City and County of San Francisco in 2003.

In 2010, Harris was elected to serve as California’s Attorney General, making her the first African American and the first woman to serve in that role. Harris was named on the “100 Most Influential People in the World” by Time magazine.  In 2016 she was elected Senator of California, becoming the second African American woman to be elected to the U.S. Senate. Harris served on two important committees: the Intelligence Committee and the Judiciary Committee.

In 2019, she launched her campaign for President of the United States. While she did not win the Democratic primary, because of her work to fight injustice and her capabilities in leadership, President-elect Joe R. Biden chose Harris as his running mate. This selection made Harris the fourth woman on a major party’s national ticket. Biden and Harris were jointly named Time Person of the Year for 2020.

Following her election as Vice President of the United States, Harris resigned from her seat on January 18, 2021, prior to taking office on January 20, 2021. She is the first female vice president, the first African-American, and the first Asian-American vice president in U.S. history.
